How to do a three-card spread
Focus your question
Three-card spreads work best with questions that have natural parts: 'What led to this? Where am I now? Where is this heading?' Frame your question before you shuffle.
Shuffle and lay three cards face-down
Shuffle while holding your question. When ready, deal three cards left to right in a horizontal row, face-down.
Flip cards left to right
Turn over the left card first (Position 1), then center (Position 2), then right (Position 3). Read each card in the context of its position.
Read the cards as a story
Don't read each card in isolation. Look for the narrative thread across all three positions — the progression or tension between them often holds the key insight.
Other ways to use three cards
Past / Present / Future is just one variation. The three-card spread adapts to any three-part framework:
Key cards for three-card readings
Some cards carry especially strong meaning in past, present, or future positions. When The Fool appears in the future position, it signals a new beginning ahead. When The World lands in the past, it marks a recently completed cycle. And when The Tower appears in the present, expect disruption that clears the way.
